DÍA DE SAN VALENTÍN PARA SIEMPRE

She stared at the document lying in front of her…And saw the date at the top, it read 14th Feb. “What an irony”, she thought out loud to herself…She gave a deep sigh and proceeded to read it thoroughly…or not really, because her mind was on a parcel she had received earlier that morning, rather than on what she was supposedly reading…

She got to the last line of the document…finally. Her hands were shaking furiously as she attempted to append her signature on the dotted lines…

She tried to grip the pen tighter…trying to force its tip to co-operate with the paper…

She took a long, hard look at the parcel that lay open in front of her…and all her resistance crumbled in a heap…as she felt emotions boiling inside her. It wasn’t just her hands…her whole body began shaking uncontrollably…And then, like a volcano, her emotions finally erupted on the surface…the tears like hot, molten lava flowing down her cheeks…

“I can’t do it…I just can’t”….she said, her whole body still trembling….the tears flowing endlessly… How things had gotten to this point, still left her bewildered…She tried to wipe her tears with the back of her palm, smearing her carefully applied mascara in the process…

She took a deep breath and tried to regain her composure…”come on, you can do this…”

She tried one more time to sign her signature on the dotted lines…but once more her eye caught the open parcel lying on the office table in front of her…and she buried her hands in her hair, and the tears continued to flow…the dotted lines on the document, still unsigned…

                                                                                             ***

Kelvin tried the door handle, and pushed the door open gently…He was rather surprised, because it was unlike Mara to leave the door unlocked…He checked his watch, it was six thirty P.M…She would be home by now, probably upstairs, getting ready for the dinner he had arranged for them at the Eko Le Meridien….and a luxury suite, specially decorated with rose petals…and scented candles specially ordered by him… where they would be spending the night, making sweet, passionate love…

He smiled to himself in a boyish, mischievous way at his thoughts…He couldn’t wait…Tonight he would make it up to her…He would show her how much he really loved her…He would prove to her that he was a changed man, and that she was the only woman who ever mattered, and will ever matter to him in the world.

He would make this the most memorable Valentine’s Day ever…

He walked into the living room and dropped his briefcase and suit on the sofa. Which was something she never approved of…The house was rather silent, a bit too quiet…Usually by now the flat screen TV hanging on the wall would be on…either showing Africa Magic or The Style Network, which were her two favorite channels…or at least she would have turned on the home theatre, because she was in love with music…

Maybe she was in the kitchen…he thought…He opened the kitchen door…she wasn’t there…Well, she must be upstairs then…He began climbing the stairs and called out…”honey, I’m home”! But there was no reply…He kept climbing…one step at a time…”Mara love, I’m home!” he called out again…still no reply…

She must be taking a shower…he thought to himself….He got to the top of the stairs and opened their bedroom door…It was dark…which was kind of strange…He turned on the lights…no sign of her, no shoes on the floor, no bag or even her office clothes on the bed or sofa in the corner…Nothing to show that she had come home…There was no sound coming from the bathroom either…He pushed his luck all the same and opened the door…Still, no sign of his wife…

The only thing he saw was a small white envelope on top of the bed…He picked it up and then sat down on the edge of the bed to examine it…He could feel something inside, like a small metal…He opened it and removed the contents…A small ring fell on to his palm…He stared at it in shock…it was the most beautiful ring he had ever seen, made of expensive gold, beautifully crested with diamonds and rubies…No one could possibly know more about that ring than him..Because he had bought it himself…

It was his wife’s wedding ring

He found a small note in the envelope…He picked it up…his hands trembling, fearing the worst…He read it..

Kelvin, I’ve done everything I can to be a good wife to you…But it seems I’m not good enough…I’m sorry, but I can’t take it anymore…I’m getting a divorce…I don’t want any divorce settlement or compensation…I’ll try to make the process very easy for both of us. Please don’t try to reach me, because nothing can make me change my mind… Always remember, I love you.

Mara
